Being a part of FBLA was one of the first steps I took to develop myself professionally and gain confidence in my leadership and communication skills. As a biology major on the pre-medical track at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, the interview, communication, and leadership skills I gained as my FBLA chapter president and secretary helped me seek opportunities and take risks I once might have avoided. Attending FBLA conferences at both the state and national levels showed me the value of talking with professionals, asking questions, and building meaningful connections. These skills have been essential when applying for scholarships, jobs, internships, and eventually medical school. I credit my FBLA experience with helping me earn selection to programs such as the Summer Health Professions Education Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Summer Research Exploration Program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. I now use those same skills in my work as a Student Government Senator and Resident Assistant, where advocacy, accountability, and collaboration matter every day.
