Today's News Story offers more information about the cell phone and other electronic devices policy mandated through LB140. LB140 was passed by the Nebraska Unicameral during this last legislative session and requires all schools in Nebraska adopt a policy that prohibits cell phones and other electronic devices by students while on school property or attending a school instructional function.

The purpose of this News Story is to share the rules for confiscation of prohibited devices, returning of confiscated devices, and inform parents and students that disciplinary measures will be published in the student-parent handbook.

Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices - Policy 504.12

The Rules for Confiscation of Prohibited Devices and Return of Confiscated Devices.

1) Electronic devices in backpacks/lockers at 7:55 a.m. and remain in the backpacks/lockers until 3:30 p.m. (Exception - school issued iPad or Laptop)

2) On Monday PLCs, Electronic devices in backpacks/lockers at 7:55 a.m. and remain in the backpacks/lockers until 2:30 p.m. (Exception - school issued iPad or Laptop)

3) Students leaving for open-campus lunch may take their electronic devices with them to lunch and return them to their backpacks/lockers upon return to school. Electronic devices should not be in use until the student has left the building and must be put away upon return to the building.

4) Students enrolled on a part-time basis will place electronic devices in their backpack/locker immediately after entering the building. Students enrolled on a part-time basis can retrieve their electronic devices as the leave the facility.

5) If an electronic device is seen by a school employee, the employee will confiscate the electronic device and turn it into the office. An automated message will be sent to the parent and/or guardian.

6) The phone will only be released to the parent or guardian. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

7) The administration reserves the right to make all decisions regarding the use of an electronic devices while on school property.

The Rules for Confiscation of Prohibited Devices and Return of Confiscated Devices can be found in the student-parent handbook. The student-parent handbook can be found on the district website (gibbonpublic.org) and will be available Monday, July 21st.

As you can see, the senators were serious about ensuring each school in Nebraska has a policy in place that regulates the use of cell phones and other electronic devices. The Gibbon Public School's policy is aligned to this new legislation and school administrators plan on visiting with students when they arrive to school.
